MH Weekly 24: Halal Meat, Mahajati, Maghazi, Carbon Fellowship

👋🏼 Muslim Hub Weekly

Salams friends,

A few months ago while I was doomscrolling Twitter (as I usually am), I came across a - let’s call it - spirited disagreement (as one usually does, on this app).

This one was straight out of Muslim Twitter starter pack: UK Muslims roasting US Muslims — as always, Canadian Muslims are irrelevant.

Now usually, it’s anonymous laymen debating complex theological issues, or the timeless “small nikkah, big honeymoon, kitten-as-mehr” banter.

But this time it was UK Muslims (from their chicken-shops) going in on Americans for their supposed indifference to eating halal.

So I'm here to take this opportunity to resolve the great zabiha conflict, and get this newsletter started by highlighting some places to get halal meat.

Vegans, keep scrolling with your eyes closed — don’t worry, we’ll tackle your dietary struggles another time when we cover the cataclysmic "is vanilla extract halal?" chronicles.

Halal Meat

Boxed Halal 🇺🇸

Boxed Halal delivers halal-certified meats across the U.S., offering curated or customizable boxes of premium meat. You can choose the size of your box and set the delivery frequency to ensure you always have the perfect amount of meat when you need it.

The Meathead Store ships hand-cut halal meats, deli items, seafood, and prepared foods, focusing on high-quality, locally sourced products — available for delivery or pickup in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Halal Butchery provides premium halal-certified meats, including beef, chicken, lamb, and fish, with specialty marinated meats and curated boxes, offering next-day delivery across the UK.

Mahajati creates bespoke handmade wood art & decor inspired by Islamic calligraphy.

This is easily one of the favorite businesses I’ve come across. You can instantly tell the care & attention to detail the artisans behind this have put into it — truly, built with ihsan.

Their collection includes wall art, table decor, candle-holders and framed Quranic verses - all intricately carved with wood.

It’s on the pricier side, but they do offer free shipping worldwide — check it out!

  1. Neeyah: halal mortgage through genuine co-ownership in the US.

  2. Salam Booking: tours, hotels, guides, & resources that are muslim-friendly.

  3. Shukr: modest fashion & accessories for men & women.

  4. The Rustik Home: home decor using geometric designs & Islamic motifs.

  5. Alchemiya: streaming service for the best movies & TV about the Muslim world.

Product of the Week: al-Maghazi

Calling this a "product" feels strange — not only is it a biography of the Prophet ﷺ but it’s also freely available for download as an e-book!

Musa ibn ʿUqba was a renowned muhaddith & historian among the tabi’un (the generation following the Prophet & his Companions عليهم الصلاة والسلام). His al-Maghāzī is purportedly the earliest biography of the Prophet’s ﷺ expeditions currently known to exist.

Believed to be lost for over 400 years, ¾’s of the work were rediscovered in the archives of Tunisia’s National Library which has lead to this translation.

Click the link above to see the praise Imam Malik, Imam as-Shafi’i & Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal have showered on the biography, and snag your copy of its translation.

A one-week program for Muslim students, treating STEM as a spiritual pursuit.

The aim of The Carbon Fellowship is to introduce promising students to a curriculum that marries scientific inquiry and the humanities, as a pursuit of spiritual contemplation in the Islamic tradition.

The next iteration of CF will be held in London, UK (with remote options) starting in Q1 2025.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, so consider applying, or share this with someone who could benefit from it!

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

مَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِيقًا يَلْتَمِسُ فِيهِ عِلْمًا سَهَّلَ اللَّهُ لَهُ بِهِ طَرِيقًا إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ

“Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise.”
