Muslim Hub Weekly #11

👋🏼 Muslim Hub Weekly

Salam friends,

As we welcome May, we bid farewell to the month of Shawwal. Shawwāl stems from شَالَ, which roughly translates to “raise” (generally to move things from one place to another) — which is partly why this month is associated with renewal.

With only 8 days to go, let me know if anyone wants to complete the 6 fasts of Shawwal with some camaraderie, to keep each other boosted during the day and plan elaborate meals to break our fast 😅.

Abu Ayyub reported:  The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said “Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan, and then follows it with six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal, it will be as if he has fasted for the entire year.

Usul

Usul is an awesome new research tool that launched last week. It leverages AI to query over 8,000 books with advanced search, and has more features coming soon, such as note-taking & search within text.

The thesis? There’s a wealth of knowledge in premodern Islamic texts that we can use AI to structure & extract valuable insights from, so that we can address contemporary issues by tapping into our rich scholastic tradition. For example: want to know how Ottoman scholars addressed interest, or, explore kalām texts written during the Enlightenment period by scholars from al-Sham? Usul solves this.

Interested in learning more about how AI can be utilized to solve problems Muslims face?Usul’s founder, Abdellatif Abdelfattah is a pioneer in using AI for Muslim products, as he was previously a co-founder of Tarteel. He has a unique perspective that you just can’t get anywhere else — so reply to this with any questions you have & we’ll post an interview with him on our blog, إِنْ شَاءَ ٱللَّٰهُ.

Muslim Tech Fest

If you’re in the UK, you definitely do not want to miss out on Muslim Tech Fest. They have some great speakers lined up, and it’s a great way to meet & network with Muslims in tech.

Muslamic Makers also hooked up a £25 off code on their newsletter — just click the button & it’ll be applied for you.

Taahirah App

While there are many menstrual companion apps out there, Taahirah App is the first one designed for Muslim women.

Taahirah App tackles the significant gap in menstrual education concerning Islamic obligations, such as determining when to resume prayers and how to track fasts given the unpredictability of cycles. Taahirah aims to bridge this gap by providing clear guidance on Islamic rulings and helping users understand when they apply to their personal situations.

This impacts countless Muslim women, so please consider supporting Taahirah App’s crowdfunding campaign, as it depends on your generosity to launch & solve this problem for Muslim women.

To show you why this is a cause worth supporting, I’ve asked Farzana, the brains behind Taahirah App, to tell us a bit about herself & how she’s going about building Taahirah — catch her thoughts here.
