Muslim Hub Weekly #2

👋🏼 Muslim Hub Weekly

Salam friends,

Welcome to our weekly roundup!

Before I share my picks I wanted to let you all know that we’ve just shipped a user system, so now you can create your own account, and start engaging with the community with your comments.

We started Muslim Hub to create a vibrant community where you can connect with other enthusiasts, founders, and the companies themselves — we’ve already had some great comments left by brands such as Zawaj Cards and Zoya Finance!

In this newsletter

  • This week’s selection of products

  • Interview by the CTO of a leading Muslim startup

  • Applications for a buildathon!

Kaaf-Nūn

kaaf-nūn designs phone-cases inspired by Islamic geometric patterns & architecture.

  • 🍃 Eco-friendly: made from plant-based materials & wheat straw — 100% compostable!

  • 💝 £1 from each sale goes to Rafah International (set up under the direction of one of my favorite scholars, Habib Umar حفظه الله), which provides humanitarian aid in Yemen.

  • ✨Upcoming Releases ✨ something they shared exclusively with Muslim Hub: designs based on the iconic Badhsahi Mosque & Oriental Persian carpets!

Honestly, I’d buy one of these for my sister or Mom, but you will not catch me with one of these on my phone, they’re not exactly designed for the fellas..

However, I still admire their work, because they’re featuring the beauty of geometric patterns & architecture in the Islamic tradition, through such a ubiquitous & practical medium: a phone case!  One of my favorite articles on this subject is The Silent Theology of Islamic Art

Wahed Invest

Wahed Invest is an automated investment platform which provides a range of shariah-compliant investment portfolios, designed to suit your goals & risk profile.

Their main funds are:

  • 💲HLAL: exposure to US equities, particularly tech stocks (filtering out conventional finance, alcohol, weapons, etc.)

    • interesting fact: HLAL has consistently outperformed the S&P 500 Index since inception — it pays to go HLAL 😭

  • 💲UMMA: exposure to global equities (developed & emerging markets excluding the US)

What particularly stood out to me is that they’ve introduced venture investing, where they curate startups to invest in & provide their own due diligence. Fostering the startup ecosystem in the Muslim world is a core mission of Muslim Hub and for that we’ll need mature venture investing arms such as Wahed’s.

Founder Interview

I think one of the best ways to learn how to build companies is to learn from founders. Last week, Tarteel’s CTO Mohamed Moussa did an informative interview on what it’s like building a project in the Muslim space using AI.

Building something?

Deen Developers is running their 2nd buildathon starting this weekend! If you’ve been thinking about building an idea but just haven’t gotten around to it yet, this supportive & passionate environment should bring it out of you iA! I remember my first hackathon (Pakathon) — even though we didn’t end up launching what we built that weekend, I made some great connections and learned a lot of lessons, that I would not have otherwise. And we actually built something in 3 days, something I thought would have taken months!

You can learn more about Deen Developers Buildathon #2 here.

Join Our Community! We’ve created a community on WhatsApp, where we can discuss how to create a consequential startup ecosystem in the Muslim world, but also a place for more casual discussion on products & news in the community.
